How has being a Sociology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I majored in Sociology because I was interested in the pre-professional marketing space. Looking back, my major was foundational in securing my first internship as an Associate Product Marketing Manager at Microsoft, when tech companies were not hiring non-engineers from Duke at the time. My career today requires me to draw upon a large variety of skill sets and knowledge such as marketing, analytical and strategic thinking, statistical analysis, problem solving, and writing proficiency. All of these skill sets were initially developed during my undergraduate studies at Duke, where I first learned to synthesize a lot of disparate information quickly to form my own recommendations. To this day, I am thankful for what I learned in my Sociology classes and how we applied our learnings throughout the coursework (i.e. research papers). It has significantly helped me succeed in my professional career post Duke."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Sociology programs?

"Take any coursework or opportunity that seems interesting to you, even if they don't seem to build upon what you've been learning. Knowledge is like an interwoven web you build throughout your life, and a wider net catches more fish!"
