1992 Major: Sociology; certificate in Markets & Management Studies
"I wanted to study business, but Duke did not offer an undergraduate business program. During my sophomore year, the Sociology Department announced a new certificate for Markets & Management Studies. I enjoyed all of my classes since they were directly related to working in the Marketing field. I was eventually employed by a start-up software company in Irvine, CA. I remember being interviewed by the CEO and he asked me how Sociology was relevant to my career goals. I told him all about a paper I wrote in the Sociology of Entrepreneurship class comparing two wildly different but equally successful entrepreneurs in the sportswear industry. My insight and conclusions impressed him and I got the job."
"If you plan to pursue a career in business, marketing, market research, statistics, or other related field, remember that the study of social behavior is critical to understanding so many aspects of today's world. Some people questioned my choice of majors, but I happily defended my position on every job interview because I knew the value of what I had learned. I challenged my critical thinking and analytical skills and felt confident in my ability to take on my first job."
