How has being a Sociology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Earning my PhD from Duke has enabled me not only to move into a unique research gap in the information warfare space, it has helped me be able to articulate threats from the surveillance economy in ways I hadn't been able to before. My degree from Duke armed me with data wrangling skills which is super important in being able to understand how algorithms are reifying inequality even further and be better able to explain why these things are not as unbiased as they claim."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Sociology programs?

"Look for the contrarian point of view - the beauty of a sociology degree from Duke is that you can look at problems from multiple angles, even angles that might be unpopular. Structural functionalism might not be a popular theory, for example, but it certainly is useful in explaining why people might support policies that lead to inequality. There is such a rich diversity of expertise at Duke sociology - you are so lucky to be there!"
