Sociology and biology double major Eugene Cho is a semi-finalist for the prestigious 2025/26 Fulbright Scholarship. If selected as a finalist, Cho will live and work in Uganda, collaborating with healthcare professionals and community members to identify and remove structural barriers to high quality healthcare. Host country committees are reviewing semi-finalists’ applications and will notify selected candidates this spring.
As a sociology major, Cho studies healthcare systems and communal disparities in accessibility. As a biology major, Cho researches brain tumor immunotherapy. She combines both areas of knowledge with the goal of making cancer care more accessible, especially in low- and medium-income countries, where more than half of known cancer cases occur.
Cho’s Fulbright application builds upon her previous work with patients and neurosurgeons in Uganda. The majority of Ugandans live in rural and remote communities with no or limited access to neurosurgical services. Patients who do receive neurosurgical care have elevated rates of mortality within hospitals. Cho plans to work with Ugandan physicians and community members to implement their vision of accessible treatment for brain tumors.
