This course investigates the social aspects of technoscience (the intersection of knowledge, science, and technology) through the lens of disability. While the Americans with Disabilities Act generated new forms of accommodation through accessible design and infrastructures, technology and scientific knowledge have been tools of oppression, assimilation, and/or liberation for disabled people in differing cultural and historical contexts. With the United States as our (general) focus, the course will touch on such themes as eugenics, race, sexuality, gender, citizenship, and the nation-state.
