Law Office of Tyler R. Smith

2003 Major: Sociology; minor in Economics

How has being a Sociology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Studying sociology was a great way for me to gain a deeper understanding of human nature and how we interact with one another. As a criminal defense attorney, I am better able to understand people's biases, which often comes in handy during jury selection at trial. Understanding my clients' socio-economic backgrounds, which I wouldn't be able to do as well without having studied Sociology at Duke, has helped connect with and be a better advocate for them."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Sociology programs?

"I remember feeling intimidated my freshman year because it felt like all the other students knew what they wanted to do after graduation, but I had no idea! They were either in Pratt to become engineers, pre-med to be doctors, or Econ and headed to Wall Street. Whereas some other areas of study may leave students feeling pigeon-holed, a Sociology major will prepare you for a broader career spectrum (e.g., law, business, politics, education, criminal justice reform, government work, and pretty much any industry centered on helping those less fortunate). Appreciate the fact that you are gaining real world knowledge that will have broad application when you graduate! Meet with your professors outside of class, take Social-Psychology and Death and Dying if they're still offered, volunteer!"
