"Privilege Lost: Downward Mobility in the New Gilded Age"
Despite the unprecedented amount of resources invested in recent cohorts of upper-middle-class children, downward mobility from the upper-middle-class remains routine. In this talk I draw upon longitudinal interview data from the National Study of Youth and Religion to introduce a new explanation of how downward mobility occurs among the benefactors of the new gilded age. I find that upper-middle-class youth adopt identities that are common in their social class, but that enacting these identities leads youth out of their original social class.
