1992 Major: Sociology

How has being a Sociology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Having graduated with a major in Sociology in 1992, I knew that I wanted to study people. I didn't know in what capacity, but I was certainly aware that based on the Sociology courses I had taken as an undergraduate student, I was invested in understanding how and why individuals, households, communities, cities, states and our country change and how trends perpetuated the change. While I did not go to graduate school for Sociology, I did get my MSW in 1996 and from there, I have received specialized training, developed a private practice, and wrote a NY Times Best Selling Book called, " Fortytude: Making the next decades the best years in your Lfe Through your Forties, Fifties and Beyond". Currently,I am in the midst of writing a second book which will pertain to the study of women of my generation."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Sociology programs?

"I don't know if I can give any sound advice since I graduated so many years ago. However, I can say that Sociology is such an interesting, relevant, important and TIMELY field to go into. What better university than Duke to major in it?"
